Instructions
For the Cake:

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk; begin and end with the flour mixture. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Frosting:
In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until light and fluffy. Add food coloring, if desired. Spread frosting between each layer of the cooled cake, and over the top and sides of the cake.
